Can you travel with CBD?

CBD is fast becoming something many of us cannot live without. Having it to our convenience at all times, including on trips away, would be ideal- but this may not always be possible.

Although CBD is a legal product in the UK and in countless countries around the world, you might be wondering if there are any restrictions worth bearing in mind if you plan to take it on your travels. All the relevant information is detailed in the article below.

CBD and air travel

There is no issue with taking CBD with you on a plane out of the UK- it is legal and accepted, just like other medications. However, it is worth bearing in mind the strict hand luggage regulations if you are considering packing your CBD in your flight bag.

Remember that liquids over 100ml are not allowed in your hand luggage. This applies to oils, gels, creams and sprays, so many forms of CBD will be confiscated if they surpass this limit. CBD gummies or tablets in a bottle should be fine to include in your hand luggage, no matter what their content.

If you’re traveling within the UK, you shouldn’t see a problem with taking your CBD with you- although you could always contact your fight operator for peace of mind beforehand if you’re unsure of their particular regulations.

Traveling to countries outside the UK may present issues depending on the location you are visiting. It is worth checking the specific restrictions on hand luggage for the country you’re visiting beforehand, so that you don’t have it taken off you at your destination airport. Australia and New Zealand, for instance, can be quite strict with what can be taken in and out of the country, so it’s worth checking up before you visit.

It has also recently been reported that in America, traveling with CBD is stricter than ever- and can land you with a stint in jail. This is because in many parts of the country, possession of cannabis-infused products, including CBD, is considered illegal, with no exceptions. If you are due to visit America, respecting the law and not traveling with CBD is the easiest way to stay safe.

CBD and ferry travel

If you have ever been on a ferry, you’ll know that baggage checks tend to be a lot more lenient, and that there is no minimum or maximum requirement for liquids onboard. However CBD Resource comments “ just because checks don’t tend to be as thorough as those at the airport, this is not to say you might not experience some issues with your CBD if it is discovered amongst your luggage.”

There is no official rule about taking CBD on a ferry, so, in theory, you should be fine (especially if you’re traveling to Amsterdam, where cannabis in all forms is legal). But if your CBD is discovered and taken away from you, there may not be much you can do about the situation. Again, checking with your travel operator beforehand is always a sensible option.
